Souza-Baranowski Correctional Center (SBCC) Use of Force Settlement

The Massachusetts Department of Correction is accused of using unconstitutional force against approximately 150 incarcerated individuals at Souza-Baranowski Correctional Center between January 10, 2020, and February 6, 2020. The lawsuit also alleges that correction officers discriminated against Black and Latinx incarcerated individuals during this period. The Commonwealth has agreed to pay $6,750,000 (inclusive of attorneys' fees) and implement policy changes to address the allegations.
