What happened
The Massachusetts Department of Correction is accused of using unconstitutional force against approximately 150 incarcerated individuals at Souza-Baranowski Correctional Center between January 10, 2020, and February 6, 2020. The lawsuit also alleges that correction officers discriminated against Black and Latinx incarcerated individuals during this period. The Commonwealth has agreed to pay $6,750,000 (inclusive of attorneys' fees) and implement policy changes to address the allegations.

All individuals incarcerated at SBCC who were subjected to uses of force between January 10, 2020, and February 6, 2020. A subclass includes all Black and Latinx individuals incarcerated at SBCC who were subjected to uses of force during the same period.
How to file
You must submit a timely Claim Form by September 4, 2025, and be determined to be a Class Member to receive payment. Claim Forms received after the deadline will not be considered.
