Meta Social Media Addiction Settlement with State Attorneys General

What happened

Meta Platforms agreed to settle allegations that it misrepresented and concealed the extent of child-related mental health harms caused by Facebook and Instagram, designing the platforms to be deliberately addictive to young people. The settlement resolves a lawsuit brought by 29 state attorneys general alleging social media addiction and mental health damage to minors.

Do you qualify?

This is not a consumer class action settlement. It is a government enforcement settlement between Meta and 51 state attorneys general (with Texas settling separately for $1 billion). The funds go to states for youth online safety initiatives as deemed by the states, not directly to consumers or affected individuals.

What the settlement pays

$16.7 billion to $17.1 billion; payment distributed over 10 years to states for youth online safety initiatives. California to receive $1.5-$2.1 billion. Participating states receive 70% of funds ($12.7 billion); remaining 30% ($5.3 billion) contingent on YouTube and TikTok implementing similar app changes.

Paid from a $17.1B settlement fund. Individual amounts depend on how many valid claims are filed.

How to file

This settlement does not create a direct consumer claim process. All proceeds are distributed to state governments and allocated for youth online safety initiatives as determined by state attorneys general. Individual consumers cannot file claims for damages.
