What happened
Sutter Health allegedly violated the law by including unfair contract terms with insurance plans that caused those plans to overpay for hospital services, which resulted in higher premiums for individuals and businesses. Sutter Health denies any wrongdoing. The court did not decide who was right; instead, the parties agreed to settle to avoid further litigation.
Do you qualify?
Class members are individuals and businesses who paid premiums to Aetna, Anthem Blue Cross, Blue Shield of California, Health Net, or United Healthcare between January 1, 2011, and March 8, 2021, while living or working in specific California counties (Alameda, Alpine, Amador, Butte, Calaveras, Colusa, Contra Costa, Del Norte, El Dorado, Glenn, Humboldt, Lake, Lassen, Marin, Mendocino, Merced, Modoc, Napa, Nevada, Placer, Plumas, Sacramento, San Francisco, San Joaquin, San Mateo, Santa Cruz, Shasta, Sierra, Siskiyou, Solano, Sonoma, Stanislaus, Sutter, Tehama, Trinity, Tuolumne, Yolo, Yuba). Class members must not have opted out, and cannot have used self-funded policies, worked for the federal government, or had Medicare/Medi-Cal inpatient care.
How to file
The claim deadline passed on September 12, 2025. Claims had to be submitted online or postmarked by that date. The settlement is now closed, and no new claims can be filed.
